Northern Lights

61 photographs. One of the best things about living way up north is the chance to witness the Northern Lights. The way the light moves through the night sky is truly magical, and the speed at which it moved is amazing! I wish I could describe it in words but I just can't, so I've done my best to capture the feeling of the Northern Lights in these photos. Unfortunately when they start to jump around the entire sky, the photos end up a solid green with stars in the background, so I don't have any shots yet of the real 'peak'. SETUP NOTES: All shots were taken with a tripod... Duh! The Nikon D40 was set to Aperture Priority (auto shutter) with the aperture wide open. Manual focus was set to infinity, and VR was on. The older photos were a Nikon point & shoot with a bulb shutter setting. I held the shutter down manually. I did an auto contrast on several of the photos, which darkened the dark areas and brightened up the snow. There was a full moon the night I took the photos with the blue sky. I was shocked that the moon light had such an effect on the photos. Enjoy, Bill
